Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs

Step 7: Reading Graphs & Answering Questions

1️⃣ What Does “Reading a Graph” Mean?

Reading a graph means observing values carefully from the x-axis and y-axis and answering questions based on them.

2️⃣ Steps to Read Any Graph Correctly

  1. Read the title of the graph
  2. Check what x-axis represents
  3. Check what y-axis represents
  4. Note the scale used on both axes
  5. Locate the point and read its value

3️⃣ Common Exam Questions

  • What is the value at a given point?
  • At what time/value is something maximum?
  • At what point do two lines meet?
  • Between which values is the increase maximum?

4️⃣ Example

If a distance–time graph shows:

  • Time = 3 hours
  • Distance = 120 km

Answer: The distance travelled in 3 hours is 120 km.

5️⃣ How to Write Answers in Exam

  • Always mention units (km, hours, °C, etc.)
  • Refer to axes while answering
  • Write clear and short statements

6️⃣ Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring scale
  • Mixing x-axis and y-axis values
  • Forgetting units

 Exam Tip

Write answers like:
“From the graph, at x = ___, y = ___.”

Memory Trick:
T → X-axis | Value → Y-axis
