Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs

Step 6: Interpreting Line Graphs

1️⃣ What is Interpretation of a Graph?

Interpretation means explaining what the graph tells us about a situation using words and numbers.

2️⃣ Types of Trends in a Line Graph

  • Upward Sloping Line → Increase
  • Downward Sloping Line → Decrease
  • Straight Horizontal Line → No change (constant)

3️⃣ Understanding Increase & Decrease

  • If the line goes up from left to right → values are increasing
  • If the line goes down from left to right → values are decreasing

4️⃣ Example

If a distance–time graph shows a rising straight line, it means:

  • Distance is increasing
  • Speed is constant

5️⃣ Comparing Two Line Graphs

  • Steeper line → faster increase
  • Less steep line → slower increase
  • Intersecting lines → equal values at that point

6️⃣ Real-Life Applications

  • Population growth
  • Temperature changes
  • Speed of vehicles

📌 Exam-Oriented Points

  • Mention increase or decrease clearly
  • Compare values using graph points
  • Always refer to axes and scale

Easy Memory Trick:
📈 Up = Increase | 📉 Down = Decrease
