Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs
Step 6: Interpreting Line Graphs
1️⃣ What is Interpretation of a Graph?
Interpretation means explaining what the graph tells us about a situation using words and numbers.
2️⃣ Types of Trends in a Line Graph
- Upward Sloping Line → Increase
- Downward Sloping Line → Decrease
- Straight Horizontal Line → No change (constant)
3️⃣ Understanding Increase & Decrease
- If the line goes up from left to right → values are increasing
- If the line goes down from left to right → values are decreasing
4️⃣ Example
If a distance–time graph shows a rising straight line, it means:
- Distance is increasing
- Speed is constant
5️⃣ Comparing Two Line Graphs
- Steeper line → faster increase
- Less steep line → slower increase
- Intersecting lines → equal values at that point
6️⃣ Real-Life Applications
- Population growth
- Temperature changes
- Speed of vehicles
📌 Exam-Oriented Points
- Mention increase or decrease clearly
- Compare values using graph points
- Always refer to axes and scale
Easy Memory Trick:
📈 Up = Increase | 📉 Down = Decrease
