Class 8 Maths – Chapter 2
Linear Equations in One Variable
Introduction
An equation is a mathematical statement that shows the equality of two expressions. In this chapter, we study linear equations involving only one variable.
📌 What is a Linear Equation?
A linear equation in one variable is an equation that can be written in the form:
ax + b = 0
where a and b are constants and x is the variable.
📐 Example 1
Solve: 2x + 5 = 15
Solution:
2x + 5 = 15
2x = 15 − 5
2x = 10
x = 10 ÷ 2
x = 5
📝 Important Points
- Always perform the same operation on both sides of the equation.
- The goal is to isolate the variable.
- Check your answer by substituting it back.
🧠 Try Yourself
1) x − 7 = 13
2) 5x = 35
3) 3x + 4 = 19
