Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs
Step 1: Basic Concepts of Graphs
Graph is a visual representation of data using points on a plane.
1️⃣ Cartesian Plane
- The plane formed by two number lines is called the Cartesian Plane.
- The horizontal line is called the X-axis.
- The vertical line is called the Y-axis.
2️⃣ Origin
The point where X-axis and Y-axis intersect is called the Origin and is written as (0, 0).
3️⃣ Coordinates of a Point
- A point on the graph is written as (x, y).
- x → distance from Y-axis (horizontal movement)
- y → distance from X-axis (vertical movement)
4️⃣ Quadrants
The Cartesian plane is divided into four parts called Quadrants:
- First Quadrant: (+ , +)
- Second Quadrant: (− , +)
- Third Quadrant: (− , −)
- Fourth Quadrant: (+ , −)
📌 Example
The point (3, 2) lies in the First Quadrant.
Tip for Students: Always move horizontally first (x), then vertically (y).
