Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs

Step 1: Basic Concepts of Graphs

Graph is a visual representation of data using points on a plane.

1️⃣ Cartesian Plane

  • The plane formed by two number lines is called the Cartesian Plane.
  • The horizontal line is called the X-axis.
  • The vertical line is called the Y-axis.

2️⃣ Origin

The point where X-axis and Y-axis intersect is called the Origin and is written as (0, 0).

3️⃣ Coordinates of a Point

  • A point on the graph is written as (x, y).
  • x → distance from Y-axis (horizontal movement)
  • y → distance from X-axis (vertical movement)

4️⃣ Quadrants

The Cartesian plane is divided into four parts called Quadrants:

  • First Quadrant: (+ , +)
  • Second Quadrant: (− , +)
  • Third Quadrant: (− , −)
  • Fourth Quadrant: (+ , −)

📌 Example

The point (3, 2) lies in the First Quadrant.

Tip for Students: Always move horizontally first (x), then vertically (y).
