Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs

Step 8: Graph-Based Word Problems

1️⃣ What are Graph-Based Word Problems?

Graph-based word problems are questions where we use a given graph to answer real-life questions.

2️⃣ How to Solve Graph-Based Problems?

  1. Read the question carefully
  2. Observe the given graph
  3. Check x-axis and y-axis labels
  4. Note the scale
  5. Read values from the graph
  6. Write the answer clearly with units

3️⃣ Example 1: Distance–Time Graph

A car travels for 4 hours. From the graph, the distance at 4 hours is 200 km.

Answer: The car travelled 200 km in 4 hours.

4️⃣ Example 2: Temperature Graph

If the temperature at 2 PM is 32°C and at 4 PM is 36°C, then:

  • Temperature increased by = 36 − 32 = 4°C

5️⃣ Example 3: Comparing Values

If two students’ marks are shown on a graph:

  • Student A → 60 marks
  • Student B → 75 marks

Answer: Student B scored 15 marks more than Student A.

6️⃣ Exam Writing Tips

  • Write answers in complete sentences
  • Use values directly from the graph
  • Always include units

❌ Common Mistakes

  • Guessing values without reading scale
  • Skipping steps
  • Wrong unit usage

Easy Memory Trick:
👉 “Read → Calculate → Write”
