Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs

Step 5: Reading Information from Graphs

1️⃣ What Does Reading a Graph Mean?

Reading a graph means understanding the information shown by points, lines, or bars on a graph.

2️⃣ Things to Observe Carefully

  • Title of the graph
  • X-axis (horizontal line)
  • Y-axis (vertical line)
  • Scale used on both axes
  • Points or lines drawn

3️⃣ How to Read a Point on a Graph

  1. Locate the point on the graph.
  2. Move vertically down to the X-axis → get x-value.
  3. Move horizontally to the Y-axis → get y-value.
  4. Write the coordinates as (x, y).

4️⃣ Example

If a point lies at x = 4 and y = 6, then the coordinate is:

(4, 6)

5️⃣ Reading Line Graphs

  • Each point shows a value at a given time.
  • Upward line → increase
  • Downward line → decrease
  • Straight line → constant value

6️⃣ Daily Life Examples

  • Distance–Time graph
  • Temperature–Day graph
  • Marks–Students graph

📌 Exam Tips

  • Always check the scale.
  • Read values carefully from axes.
  • Write answers with proper units.

Easy Memory Trick:
👉 “Down for X, Side for Y”
