Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs
Step 4: Plotting Points on a Graph
1️⃣ What is Plotting a Point?
Plotting a point means showing the exact position of a point on the graph using its coordinates.
2️⃣ Remember the Coordinate Order
(x-coordinate, y-coordinate)
First move along the X-axis, then along the Y-axis.
3️⃣ Steps to Plot a Point
- Start from the origin (0,0).
- Move right or left according to the x-value.
- From there, move up or down according to the y-value.
- Mark the point clearly with a dot.
4️⃣ Four Quadrants
- 1st Quadrant: (+x, +y)
- 2nd Quadrant: (−x, +y)
- 3rd Quadrant: (−x, −y)
- 4th Quadrant: (+x, −y)
5️⃣ Examples
(3, 4) → Move 3 right, 4 up (1st quadrant)
(-2, 5) → Move 2 left, 5 up (2nd quadrant)
(-3, -4) → Move 3 left, 4 down (3rd quadrant)
(4, -2) → Move 4 right, 2 down (4th quadrant)
Exam Tips
- Plot neatly using a ruler.
- Mark scale properly.
- Label points clearly.
