Class 8 Maths – Chapter 15: Introduction to Graphs
Step 3: Reading Coordinates from a Graph
1️⃣ What Does Reading Coordinates Mean?
Reading coordinates means finding the (x, y) values of a point already marked on a graph.
2️⃣ Order of Coordinates
Coordinates are always written as:
(x-coordinate, y-coordinate)
3️⃣ Steps to Read a Point
- From the point, draw an imaginary line to the X-axis.
- Read the value on the X-axis → this is the x-coordinate.
- Now draw an imaginary line to the Y-axis.
- Read the value on the Y-axis → this is the y-coordinate.
4️⃣ Example
A point is 5 units right and 2 units up from the origin.
Coordinates = (5, 2)
5️⃣ Special Case: Origin
The origin has coordinates:
(0, 0)
📌 Important Exam Tips
- Always write x first, y next.
- Check whether the point is left/right or up/down.
- Do not reverse coordinates.
Memory Trick: “Go sideways → then upward”
