STAGE 1: Concepts Explained
Length
Length tells how long something is.
Units of length:
- Millimetre (mm)
- Centimetre (cm)
- Metre (m)
- Kilometre (km)
Perimeter
Perimeter is the total length of the boundary of a closed figure.
Perimeter of a Rectangle
Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Breadth)
Perimeter of a Square
Perimeter = 4 × Side
Area
Area is the space covered by a figure.
Area of a Rectangle
Area = Length × Breadth
Area of a Square
Area = Side × Side
Area is measured in square units such as cm² and m².
STAGE 2: Solved Examples
Example 1:
Find the perimeter of a rectangle with length 8 cm and breadth 5 cm.
Solution:
Perimeter = 2 × (8 + 5)
= 2 × 13 = 26 cm
Example 2:
Find the area of a square with side 6 cm.
Solution:
Area = 6 × 6 = 36 cm²
Example 3:
Find the area of a rectangle of length 10 cm and breadth 4 cm.
Solution:
Area = 10 × 4 = 40 cm²
