Class 6 Mathematics
Chapter 13: Symmetry
STAGE 0: Foundation
Symmetry means balance 😊
If we cut an object into two equal halves that look exactly the same, it is symmetric.
Examples of symmetry around us:
- Butterfly
- Leaves
- Human face
- Flowers
STAGE 1: Concepts Explained
Line of Symmetry
A line of symmetry divides a figure into two identical halves.
Each half is the mirror image of the other.
Examples of Line of Symmetry
- Square – 4 lines of symmetry
- Rectangle – 2 lines of symmetry
- Circle – Many lines of symmetry
- Triangle – Depends on type
Reflection
Reflection means mirror image.
When a figure is reflected across a line, both sides look exactly the same.
STAGE 2: Solved Examples
Example 1:
How many lines of symmetry does a square have?
Solution:
A square has 4 lines of symmetry.
Example 2:
Name an object from daily life that shows symmetry.
Solution:
Butterfly.
Example 3:
Does a rectangle have symmetry?
Solution:
Yes, a rectangle has 2 lines of symmetry.
STAGE 3: Practice Questions
1. What is symmetry?
2. What is a line of symmetry?
3. How many lines of symmetry does a circle have?
4. Name any two symmetric objects around you.
5. Does a scalene triangle have a line of symmetry?
STAGE 4: Quick Revision
- Symmetry means balance
- Line of symmetry divides a figure equally
- Square has 4 lines of symmetry
- Rectangle has 2 lines of symmetry
- Circle has many lines of symmetry
