Class 6 Mathematics

Chapter 2: Whole Numbers

STAGE 0: Foundation

We use numbers every day to count objects 😊

Whole numbers help us count things starting from zero.

In this chapter, we learn about:

  • Natural numbers and whole numbers
  • Number line
  • Successor and predecessor
  • Properties of whole numbers

STAGE 1: Concepts Explained

Natural Numbers

Natural numbers are numbers used for counting.

Examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...

Whole Numbers

Whole numbers include zero and all natural numbers.

Whole numbers = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...

Number Line

A number line shows numbers in order on a straight line.

Zero (0) is at the centre. Numbers increase to the right.

Successor

The successor of a number is the next number.

Example: Successor of 7 is 8.

Predecessor

The predecessor of a number is the number just before it.

Example: Predecessor of 7 is 6.

Properties of Whole Numbers

  • Closure: Whole numbers are closed under addition and multiplication.
  • Commutative: a + b = b + a and a × b = b × a
  • Associative: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
  • Additive Identity: 0 is the additive identity.
  • Multiplicative Identity: 1 is the multiplicative identity.

STAGE 2: Solved Examples

Example 1:
Write the successor of 235.

Solution:
Successor of 235 = 236

Example 2:
Write the predecessor of 1000.

Solution:
Predecessor of 1000 = 999

Example 3:
Find: 0 + 45

Solution:
0 + 45 = 45

STAGE 3: Practice Questions

1. Write the successor of 1,234.
2. Write the predecessor of 5,000.
3. Write the smallest whole number.
4. Find: 1 × 368.
5. Show the number 7 on a number line.

STAGE 4: Quick Revision

  • Whole numbers start from 0
  • Successor means next number
  • Predecessor means previous number
  • 0 is additive identity
  • 1 is multiplicative identity
