STAGE 1: Concepts Explained
Large Numbers
Numbers greater than thousands are called large numbers.
Example:
- 10,000
- 1,00,000
- 10,00,000
Place Value
The value of a digit depends on its place.
Example:
In number 4,352:
- 4 → Thousands
- 3 → Hundreds
- 5 → Tens
- 2 → Ones
Indian Number System
In India, we write numbers using:
- Ones
- Tens
- Hundreds
- Thousands
- Lakhs
- Crores
Example:
25,34,678 = Twenty five lakh thirty four thousand six hundred seventy eight
Roman Numerals
Romans used symbols to write numbers.
- I = 1
- V = 5
- X = 10
- L = 50
- C = 100
- D = 500
- M = 1000
Example:
- IV = 4
- IX = 9
- XL = 40
Estimation and Rounding
Estimation means finding an approximate value.
Example:
4,876 ≈ 4,900
STAGE 2: Solved Examples
Example 1:
Write the place value of 6 in 6,342.
Solution:
6 is in thousands place.
Place value = 6 × 1000 = 6000
Example 2:
Write 48,235 in words.
Solution:
Forty eight thousand two hundred thirty five
