Class 6 Mathematics
Chapter 11: Algebra
STAGE 0: Foundation
Algebra helps us use letters instead of numbers 😊
It makes Maths shorter and easier.
In this chapter, we learn:
- Variables
- Constants
- Algebraic expressions
- Simple equations
STAGE 1: Concepts Explained
What is Algebra?
Algebra is a branch of Mathematics that uses letters to represent numbers.
Variables
A variable is a letter that stands for a number.
Examples:
- x
- y
- a
Constants
A constant is a fixed number.
Examples:
- 2, 5, 10
Algebraic Expressions
An algebraic expression is formed using variables, constants, and operations.
Examples:
- x + 5
- 2y
- 3a − 4
Simple Equation
An equation shows equality between two sides.
Example:
x + 3 = 8
STAGE 2: Solved Examples
Example 1:
Identify the variable in 5x + 3.
Solution:
The variable is x.
Example 2:
Write an algebraic expression for “5 more than a number”.
Solution:
Let the number be x.
Expression = x + 5
Example 3:
Solve: x + 4 = 10
Solution:
x + 4 = 10
x = 10 − 4
x = 6
STAGE 3: Practice Questions
1. Write an algebraic expression for “3 less than a number”.
2. Identify the variable in 7y − 2.
3. Write an expression for “twice a number”.
4. Solve: x + 5 = 12.
5. Write any one example of an equation.
STAGE 4: Quick Revision
- Variables are letters
- Constants are fixed numbers
- Expressions use letters and numbers
- Equations show equality
