STAGE 0: Foundation

We see many shapes around us 😊

Shapes have sides, corners, and angles.

In this chapter, we learn about:

  • Angles and their measurement
  • Triangles and quadrilaterals
  • Polygons
  • 3D shapes

STAGE 1: Concepts Explained

Angles

An angle is formed by two rays meeting at a point.

Types of Angles

  • Acute angle (less than 90°)
  • Right angle (90°)
  • Obtuse angle (more than 90°)
  • Straight angle (180°)
  • Reflex angle (more than 180°)

Measuring Angles

Angles are measured using a protractor.

Triangles

A triangle has three sides and three angles.

Types of Triangles (by sides)

  • Equilateral triangle (all sides equal)
  • Isosceles triangle (two sides equal)
  • Scalene triangle (all sides different)

Quadrilaterals

A quadrilateral has four sides.

Examples:

  • Square
  • Rectangle
  • Rhombus
  • Trapezium

Polygons

A polygon is a closed figure made of straight line segments.

Examples:

  • Triangle (3 sides)
  • Quadrilateral (4 sides)
  • Pentagon (5 sides)
  • Hexagon (6 sides)

3D Shapes

3D shapes have length, breadth, and height.

Examples of 3D Shapes

  • Cube
  • Cuboid
  • Sphere
  • Cylinder
  • Cone

Faces, Edges, and Vertices

  • Face – flat surface
  • Edge – line where two faces meet
  • Vertex – corner point

STAGE 2: Solved Examples

Example 1:
Name the angle which is exactly 90°.

Solution:
Right angle.

Example 2:
How many sides does a pentagon have?

Solution:
A pentagon has 5 sides.

Example 3:
Name a 3D shape that looks like a ball.

Solution:
Sphere.

STAGE 3: Practice Questions

1. Name any two types of angles.
2. Name a quadrilateral with all sides equal.
3. How many faces does a cube have?
4. Name a polygon with six sides.
5. Name one object shaped like a cylinder.

STAGE 4: Quick Revision

  • Angles are measured in degrees
  • Triangle has 3 sides
  • Quadrilateral has 4 sides
  • Polygons have straight sides
  • 3D shapes have faces, edges, and vertices
