STAGE 1: Concepts Explained
What is a Fraction?
A fraction represents a part of a whole.
Example:
1/4 means one part out of four equal parts.
Parts of a Fraction
- Numerator: Top number (shows parts taken)
- Denominator: Bottom number (shows total equal parts)
Types of Fractions
Proper Fraction
Numerator is less than denominator.
Example: 3/5
Improper Fraction
Numerator is greater than or equal to denominator.
Example: 7/4
Mixed Fraction
Combination of a whole number and a fraction.
Example: 1 3/4
Equivalent Fractions
Fractions having the same value are called equivalent fractions.
Example:
1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6
Fractions on Number Line
Fractions can be shown on a number line by dividing the line into equal parts.
STAGE 2: Solved Examples
Example 1:
Write the numerator and denominator of 5/8.
Solution:
Numerator = 5
Denominator = 8
Example 2:
Write one equivalent fraction of 2/3.
Solution:
2/3 = 4/6
Example 3:
Convert 7/4 into a mixed fraction.
Solution:
7/4 = 1 3/4
