Decimals are used in our daily life 😊
We see decimals in:
- Money (₹12.50)
- Length (2.5 cm)
- Weight (1.75 kg)
Decimals help us write parts of a whole more easily.
STAGE 1: Concepts Explained
What is a Decimal?
A decimal is a way of writing fractions using a decimal point (.).
Example:
- 1/10 = 0.1
- 5/10 = 0.5
Decimal Point
The dot (.) used in decimals is called the decimal point.
Place Value in Decimals
Places to the right of the decimal point are:
- Tenths (1/10)
- Hundredths (1/100)
- Thousandths (1/1000)
Example:
In 3.45:
3 → Ones
4 → Tenths
5 → Hundredths
Decimals in Money
₹1 = 100 paise
₹12.50 = 12 rupees and 50 paise
Like and Unlike Decimals
Decimals with the same number of decimal places are called like decimals.
Example: 2.3 and 5.6
STAGE 2: Solved Examples
Example 1:
Write 3/10 as a decimal.
Solution:
3/10 = 0.3
Example 2:
Write the place value of 6 in 2.67.
Solution:
6 is in the tenths place.
Example 3:
Convert ₹45.75 into rupees and paise.
Solution:
45 rupees and 75 paise

1. Write 7/10 as a decimal.
