Class 6 Mathematics
Chapter 14: Practical Geometry
STAGE 0: Foundation
Practical geometry helps us draw shapes accurately 😊
Instead of imagining figures, we construct them using simple tools.
In this chapter, we learn to use:
- Ruler
- Compass
- Protractor
STAGE 1: Geometrical Instruments
Ruler (Scale)
A ruler is used to draw straight lines and measure length.
Compass
A compass is used to draw circles and arcs.
Protractor
A protractor is used to measure and draw angles.
STAGE 2: Basic Constructions
Drawing a Line Segment
Steps:
- Place the ruler on paper
- Mark two points
- Join the points using ruler
Drawing a Circle
Steps:
- Fix the compass at the centre
- Open the compass to required radius
- Rotate the compass to draw a circle
Drawing an Angle
Steps:
- Draw a base line
- Place protractor at the vertex
- Mark the required angle
- Join the point to form the angle
STAGE 3: Solved Examples
Example 1:
Draw a line segment of length 6 cm.
Solution:
Use a ruler and mark two points 6 cm apart.
Join them with a straight line.
Example 2:
Draw a circle of radius 4 cm.
Solution:
Fix compass at centre, open it to 4 cm,
and draw the circle.
Example 3:
Draw an angle of 60°.
Solution:
Use a protractor to mark 60° and draw the angle.
STAGE 4: Practice Questions
1. Draw a line segment of length 5 cm.
2. Draw a circle of radius 3 cm.
3. Draw an angle of 90°.
4. Name the instrument used to draw circles.
5. Name the instrument used to measure angles.
