Long, long ago, human beings lived very differently from us. They did not have houses, schools, or shops.

This chapter tells us about the earliest people, how they lived, what they ate, and how they made tools.

These people are called hunter-gatherers.

Who Were the Earliest People?

The earliest people lived many thousands of years ago. They moved from place to place in search of food.

What Did They Eat?

They ate:

  • Fruits
  • Roots
  • Seeds
  • Meat of animals

They hunted animals and gathered food. So they are called hunter-gatherers.

Where Did They Live?

They lived near:

  • Rivers
  • Forests
  • Hills

Water and animals were easily available in these places.

How Do We Know About Them?

We learn about early people from:

  • Stone tools
  • Animal bones
  • Cave paintings

Stone Tools

The earliest people made tools from stone. These tools were used for:

  • Cutting meat
  • Digging roots
  • Hunting animals

Fire

The discovery of fire was very important. Fire helped people to:

  • Cook food
  • Keep warm
  • Scare away wild animals
