After small kingdoms, some rulers became very powerful. They ruled over large areas.

These large areas were called empires. This chapter tells us about new empires and kingdoms that ruled India long ago.

What is an Empire?

An empire is a large kingdom ruled by a powerful king. Many smaller regions were under one ruler.

The Gupta Empire

The Gupta Empire was one of the great empires of India.

Gupta rulers were known for:

  • Good administration
  • Peace and prosperity
  • Support to art and learning

Samudragupta

Samudragupta was a powerful Gupta ruler. He expanded his empire through wars and alliances.

Chandragupta II

Chandragupta II was another important ruler. His rule was peaceful and prosperous.

Harshavardhana

Harshavardhana ruled northern India. He was known as a kind and generous king.

He supported education and helped the poor.

Administration

Kings appointed officers to help them rule. Taxes were collected to run the kingdom.

Life of People

People lived peaceful lives. Art, culture, and learning developed during this time.
