Globe: Latitudes and Longitudes | NCERT Notes

STAGE 0: Let Us Begin (Foundation)

To understand the Earth better, we use a globe. A globe is a small model of the Earth.

This chapter helps us learn how to find places on Earth using imaginary lines.

STAGE 1: Chapter Explanation (Story Style)

The Globe

A globe shows the Earth correctly. It shows continents, oceans, countries, and lines.

Imaginary Lines

Some lines are drawn on the globe to help us locate places.

These lines are not real. They are called imaginary lines.

Latitudes

Latitudes are horizontal lines. They run from east to west.

The most important latitude is the Equator.

The Equator divides the Earth into:

  • Northern Hemisphere
  • Southern Hemisphere

Important Latitudes

  • Tropic of Cancer
  • Tropic of Capricorn
  • Arctic Circle
  • Antarctic Circle

Longitudes

Longitudes are vertical lines. They run from north to south.

The Prime Meridian

The most important longitude is the Prime Meridian.

It divides the Earth into:

  • Eastern Hemisphere
  • Western Hemisphere

Why Are These Lines Important?

Latitudes and longitudes help us:

  • Find places
  • Study climate
  • Understand time
