Motions of the Earth | NCERT Notes

STAGE 0: Let Us Begin (Foundation)

Have you noticed 🌞 day and 🌙 night? Have you seen seasons change?

All these happen because the Earth moves.

This chapter explains the two motions of the Earth in a very easy way.

STAGE 1: Chapter Explanation (Story Style)

Motion of the Earth

The Earth is always moving. It moves in two different ways.

  • Rotation
  • Revolution

Rotation

Rotation means the Earth spinning on its own axis.

The Earth takes about 24 hours to complete one rotation.

Day and Night

Rotation causes day and night.

The side of the Earth facing the Sun has day. The other side has night.

Revolution

Revolution means the Earth moving around the Sun.

The Earth takes about 365 days to complete one revolution.

Seasons

Revolution causes change in seasons.

Different parts of the Earth receive different amounts of sunlight.

Why Are Motions Important?

Because of Earth’s motions:

  • We get day and night
  • We have seasons
  • Life on Earth becomes possible

Q1. What are the two motions of the Earth?
Answer: Rotation and Revolution.

Q2. What causes day and night?
Answer: Rotation of the Earth causes day and night.
