Maps | NCERT Notes

STAGE 0: Let Us Begin (Foundation)

Have you ever seen a map? 🗺️ A map helps us find places easily.

This chapter explains what maps are and how to read them in a very simple way.

STAGE 1: Chapter Explanation (Story Style)

What is a Map?

A map is a drawing of the Earth or a part of the Earth. It is drawn on paper.

Types of Maps

There are three main types of maps:

  • Physical maps – show mountains, rivers, plains
  • Political maps – show countries, states, cities
  • Thematic maps – show special information like rainfall

Directions

Directions help us know where places are.

  • North (N)
  • South (S)
  • East (E)
  • West (W)

On most maps, the top shows North.

Symbols

Maps use small pictures called symbols.

Symbols help show roads, rivers, schools, and hospitals.

Scale

The scale shows distance on the map.

A small line on the map tells us how far places are in real life.
