This chapter teaches us how different objects are grouped based on their properties such as appearance, hardness, solubility, transparency, and whether they float or sink.

Basic Meaning

Sorting: Grouping objects based on similar properties.

Material: Substance from which an object is made.

STAGE 1: Complete Chapter Explanation

Objects Around Us

Objects around us are made of different materials like wood, metal, plastic, glass, cotton, and paper.

Why Do We Sort Materials?

  • To study them easily
  • To understand their uses
  • To compare their properties

Properties of Materials

1. Appearance

Materials may look shiny or dull. Metals like gold and iron are shiny.

2. Hardness

Some materials are hard (stone, iron) while some are soft (cotton, sponge).

3. Soluble or Insoluble in Water

Substances that dissolve in water are called soluble (salt, sugar). Substances that do not dissolve are insoluble (sand, chalk).

4. Objects That Float or Sink

Some objects float on water (wood, plastic ball). Some objects sink in water (stone, iron nail).

5. Transparency

  • Transparent: Allow light to pass (glass, water)
  • Translucent: Allow partial light (butter paper)
  • Opaque: Do not allow light (wood, metal)
