Components of Food

Food contains different components called nutrients. The major nutrients are:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  • Fats
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Dietary fibre
  • Water

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates provide energy to the body.

Sources: Rice, wheat, potato, sugar

Proteins

Proteins help in growth and repair of body tissues.

Sources: Pulses, milk, eggs, meat

Fats

Fats give energy and keep the body warm.

Sources: Butter, oil, ghee, nuts

Vitamins

Vitamins protect us from diseases and keep our body healthy.

Minerals

Minerals help in building bones, teeth, and blood.

Dietary Fibre (Roughage)

Roughage helps in digestion and prevents constipation.

Water

Water helps in digestion, absorption of nutrients, and removal of wastes.

Balanced Diet

A balanced diet contains all nutrients in the right amount needed by the body.

Deficiency Diseases

Diseases caused due to lack of nutrients are called deficiency diseases.

  • Lack of Vitamin C → Scurvy
  • Lack of Vitamin D → Rickets
  • Lack of Iron → Anaemia
