Class 6 Science – Chapter 12
Electricity and Circuits | NCERT Complete Notes
STAGE 0: Foundation / Basics
What is this Chapter About?
This chapter introduces electricity, electric circuits, and simple electrical components used in daily life such as bulbs, cells, and switches.
Why Should We Learn This Chapter?
- To understand how electric devices work
- To know how electricity flows in a circuit
- To learn safe and correct use of electricity
Basic Meanings
Electricity: A form of energy that makes electrical devices work.
Circuit: A complete closed path through which electricity flows.
STAGE 1: Complete Chapter Explanation
Electric Cell
An electric cell is a source of electricity. It has two terminals: positive (+) and negative (–).
Electric Bulb
An electric bulb has a thin wire called filament. When electricity flows through it, the filament glows.
Electric Circuit
An electric circuit consists of a cell, connecting wires, a bulb, and a switch. Electricity flows only when the circuit is complete.
Switch
A switch is used to open or close a circuit.
- ON: Circuit is complete, bulb glows
- OFF: Circuit is broken, bulb does not glow
Conductors and Insulators
- Conductors: Materials that allow electricity to pass (copper, iron)
- Insulators: Materials that do not allow electricity to pass (rubber, plastic)
STAGE 2: NCERT Textbook Questions & Answers
Q1. What is an electric circuit?
Answer: A complete closed path through which electricity flows is called an electric circuit.
Q2. What happens when a switch is OFF?
Answer: The circuit is broken and electricity does not flow.
Q3. Name two conductors of electricity.
Answer: Copper and iron.
Q4. Name two insulators of electricity.
Answer: Rubber and plastic.
STAGE 3: Previous Exam Questions & Answers
Previous Exam Question:
Draw and explain a simple electric circuit.
Answer:
A simple electric circuit consists of a cell, bulb, switch, and connecting
wires. When the switch is ON, the circuit is complete and the bulb glows.
Exam Insight:
Diagrams of electric circuits and questions on conductors and insulators
are commonly asked in Class 6 exams.
