STAGE 1: Complete Chapter Explanation

What are Fibres?

Fibres are thin strands that are used to make clothes. Fibres are first converted into yarn and then into fabric.

Types of Fibres

Fibres are mainly of two types:

  • Natural fibres
  • Synthetic fibres

Natural Fibres

Natural fibres are obtained from plants and animals.

  • Cotton: Obtained from cotton plants
  • Jute: Obtained from jute plants
  • Wool: Obtained from sheep and other animals
  • Silk: Obtained from silkworms

Cotton Fibre

Cotton fibres are obtained from cotton bolls. The process of separating cotton fibres from seeds is called ginning.

Jute Fibre

Jute fibre is obtained from the stem of jute plants. The stems are soaked in water to separate fibres. This process is called retting.

Animal Fibres

Wool comes from hair of animals like sheep, goat, and camel. Silk comes from cocoons of silkworms.

From Fibre to Yarn

The process of making yarn from fibres is called spinning. Spinning can be done using a charkha or spinning machines.

From Yarn to Fabric

Fabric is made from yarn by:

  • Weaving: Interlacing two sets of yarns
  • Knitting: Making fabric using a single yarn
