Basic Meaning
Plant: A living organism that grows in soil and prepares its own food.

Types of Plants
Plants are grouped based on their size and nature.
- Herbs: Small plants with soft stems (mint, spinach)
- Shrubs: Medium-sized plants with hard stems (rose, hibiscus)
- Trees: Tall plants with strong trunks (mango, neem)
- Climbers: Weak stems, need support (pea, grapevine)
- Creepers: Weak stems, spread on ground (pumpkin, watermelon)
Parts of a Plant
A plant has two main parts:
- Root system
- Shoot system
Root System
Roots grow below the ground. They fix the plant in soil and absorb water and minerals.
Types of Roots
- Tap root: One main root (mustard, mango)
- Fibrous root: Many similar roots (wheat, rice)
Shoot System
The shoot system grows above the ground and includes stem, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.
Functions of Plant Parts
- Stem: Supports plant and transports water and food
- Leaves: Prepare food (photosynthesis)
- Flowers: Help in reproduction
- Fruits: Protect seeds
- Seeds: Grow into new plants
Leaf
A leaf has lamina, petiole, and veins. Leaves prepare food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
Venation
- Reticulate venation: Net-like veins (mango)
- Parallel venation: Parallel veins (grass)
