Class 8 Science – Chapter 1
Page 3: Harvesting, Threshing & Storage
🌾 Harvesting
Harvesting is the process of cutting and collecting mature crops from the field. Crops are harvested when they are fully grown and ready to be used.
- Traditional method: Sickle
- Modern method: Harvester / Combine
✔ Harvesting at the correct time is very important to avoid crop loss.
🌬️ Threshing
Threshing is the process of separating grains from the harvested crop.
- Beating the crop on hard surface
- Using machines like Threshers
🍃 Winnowing
Winnowing is used to separate lighter chaff from heavier grains using wind.
🏪 Storage of Grains
After harvesting, grains must be stored safely to protect them from insects, rats, and moisture.
- Granaries
- Warehouses
- Metal silos
- Gunny bags
⚠ Moisture can spoil grains, so they must be dried properly before storage.
🧠 Key Points to Remember
- Harvesting = cutting crops
- Threshing = separating grains
- Winnowing = removing chaff
- Proper storage prevents food loss
