Class 7 Mathematics
Chapter 4: Simple Equations
STAGE 0: Foundation
An equation is a mathematical statement that shows equality. Simple equations help us find unknown values.
In daily life, equations are used to:
- Find unknown numbers
- Solve puzzles
- Calculate missing values
STAGE 1: What is an Equation?
An equation has an equals sign (=).
Example:
- x + 5 = 12
- 2y = 10
Here, x and y are unknown values.
STAGE 2: Solving Simple Equations
To solve an equation means to find the value of the unknown.
Example:
x + 7 = 15
Subtract 7 from both sides:
x = 15 − 7 = 8
STAGE 3: Equations with Multiplication
Example:
3x = 18
Divide both sides by 3:
x = 18 ÷ 3 = 6
STAGE 4: Equations with Division
Example:
x ÷ 4 = 5
Multiply both sides by 4:
x = 5 × 4 = 20
STAGE 5: Word Problems
Example:
The sum of a number and 9 is 17. Find the number.
Let the number be x.
x + 9 = 17
x = 17 − 9 = 8
STAGE 6: Practice Questions
1. Solve: x + 6 = 14
2. Solve: 5x = 25
3. Solve: x ÷ 3 = 7
4. The difference between a number and 5 is 12. Find the number.
5. The product of a number and 4 is 36. Find the number.
