Answer the following questions:
(i) What are the Temperate Grasslands?
Temperate grasslands are regions found in the mid-latitudes. They have moderate climate and are covered mainly with grasses. These grasslands are suitable for farming and animal rearing.
(ii) Why are the Prairies called the “Granaries of the World”?
The Prairies are called the “Granaries of the World” because large quantities of wheat and maize are produced there. Fertile soil, flat land and use of modern machines help in large-scale farming.
(iii) Name the animals found in the Prairies.
The animals found in the Prairies include bison (buffalo), antelopes, coyotes, prairie dogs and several species of birds.
(iv) What is the main occupation of people in the Velds?
The main occupations of people in the Velds are agriculture, sheep rearing and mining. Gold and diamonds are mined in this region.

Give reasons:
(i) The Prairies are suitable for large-scale farming.
The Prairies have flat land, fertile soil and moderate rainfall. Modern agricultural machines are used extensively. These factors make the Prairies suitable for large-scale farming.
(ii) Sheep rearing is common in the Velds.
The Velds have short grasses suitable for grazing. The climate is also favourable for sheep rearing. Therefore, sheep rearing is a common activity in the Velds.
