Q1. What is the Legislative Assembly?

The Legislative Assembly is the law-making body of a state. Its members are called MLAs. They are elected by the people and represent different constituencies. The Assembly discusses problems and makes laws for the state.


Q2. How is the Chief Minister elected?

After the state elections, the party or group with the majority of MLAs forms the government. The leader of this majority party is chosen as the Chief Minister.


Q3. What is the role of the Chief Minister?

The Chief Minister is the head of the state government. He or she:

  • Leads the Council of Ministers
  • Takes major policy decisions
  • Coordinates the work of different departments
  • Is responsible to the Legislative Assembly

Q4. What is the Council of Ministers?

The Council of Ministers consists of the Chief Minister and other ministers. Each minister is in charge of a department such as health, education or transport. They work together to run the state government.


Q5. What is the role of the Governor?

The Governor is the constitutional head of the state. He or she:

  • Is appointed by the President of India
  • Appoints the Chief Minister
  • Gives approval to bills passed by the Assembly

Q6. How are laws made in a state?

Laws are made in the following way:

  • Problems are discussed in the Legislative Assembly
  • A bill is introduced
  • Members debate and vote on the bill
  • After approval, it becomes a law

Q7. What is the role of the opposition?

The opposition consists of parties that are not part of the government. They:

  • Question the government’s decisions
  • Point out mistakes
  • Ensure the government works responsibly

Q8. Why are debates important in the Legislative Assembly?

Debates are important because they allow members to express their views, discuss problems openly and help in making better laws. They strengthen democracy.
