Direct and Inverse Proportions
STEP 1: Basic Concepts & Definitions
1. What is Proportion?
Two quantities are said to be in proportion when they change in relation to each other.
2. Direct Proportion
Two quantities are in direct proportion if an increase in one quantity results in an increase in the other quantity, and a decrease in one results in a decrease in the other.

Example:
More items → More cost
Less items → Less cost
3. Inverse Proportion
Two quantities are in inverse proportion if an increase in one quantity results in a decrease in the other quantity.

Example:
More workers → Less time
Fewer workers → More time
4. Key Difference (Very Important)
• Direct Proportion → both increase or both decrease
• Inverse Proportion → one increases, the other decreases

First identify whether the situation is Direct or Inverse before solving problems.
