Chapter 3: Fibre to Fabric
STAGE 0: Foundation / Basics
Clothes we wear are made from fabrics. Fabrics are made from fibres.
Fibres are thin, hair-like structures.
Examples of fibres: Cotton, Wool, Silk, Jute
STAGE 1: Types of Fibres
Fibres are of two main types:
- Natural Fibres
- Synthetic Fibres
Natural Fibres
Natural fibres are obtained from plants and animals.
Examples:
- Cotton – obtained from cotton plant
- Jute – obtained from jute plant
- Wool – obtained from sheep
- Silk – obtained from silkworm
Wool
Wool is obtained from the hair of animals like sheep, goat, and yak.
Steps involved in making wool:
- Shearing – removal of hair
- Scouring – washing the hair
- Sorting – separating fibres
- Dyeing – adding colour
- Spinning – making yarn
Silk
Silk is obtained from silkworms.
The process of obtaining silk from silkworms is called Sericulture.
Life cycle of silkworm:
- Egg
- Larva (Silkworm)
- Pupa
- Adult moth
