Chapter 3: Fibre to Fabric

STAGE 0: Foundation / Basics

Clothes we wear are made from fabrics. Fabrics are made from fibres.

Fibres are thin, hair-like structures.

Examples of fibres: Cotton, Wool, Silk, Jute

STAGE 1: Types of Fibres

Fibres are of two main types:

  • Natural Fibres
  • Synthetic Fibres

Natural Fibres

Natural fibres are obtained from plants and animals.

Examples:

  • Cotton – obtained from cotton plant
  • Jute – obtained from jute plant
  • Wool – obtained from sheep
  • Silk – obtained from silkworm

Wool

Wool is obtained from the hair of animals like sheep, goat, and yak.

Steps involved in making wool:

  1. Shearing – removal of hair
  2. Scouring – washing the hair
  3. Sorting – separating fibres
  4. Dyeing – adding colour
  5. Spinning – making yarn

Silk

Silk is obtained from silkworms.

The process of obtaining silk from silkworms is called Sericulture.

Life cycle of silkworm:

  • Egg
  • Larva (Silkworm)
  • Pupa
  • Adult moth
