Class 7 Mathematics

Chapter 15: Visualising Solid Shapes

STAGE 0: Foundation

In daily life, we see many objects that have length, breadth, and height. Such objects are called solid shapes.

Examples:

  • Dice
  • Ball
  • Book
  • Box

STAGE 1: 2D and 3D Shapes

2D shapes have only length and breadth.

Examples: Square, Rectangle, Triangle, Circle

3D shapes have length, breadth, and height.

Examples: Cube, Cuboid, Sphere, Cylinder

STAGE 2: Faces, Edges, and Vertices

Face: Flat surface of a solid shape
Edge: Line where two faces meet
Vertex: Corner point

Example: Cube

  • Faces = 6
  • Edges = 12
  • Vertices = 8

STAGE 3: Nets of Solid Shapes

A net is a flat shape which can be folded to form a solid.

Examples:

  • Net of cube → 6 squares
  • Net of cuboid → 6 rectangles

STAGE 4: Different Views of Objects

A solid object looks different from different sides.

  • Top view
  • Side view
  • Front view

Example: A cube looks like a square from all views.

STAGE 5: Map and Plan

A map is a drawing of a place seen from the top.

A plan shows how something looks from above.

Example: Classroom seating plan.

STAGE 6: Solved Examples

Example 1:
How many faces does a cuboid have?

A cuboid has 6 faces.

Example 2:
Name a solid shape with no edges.

A sphere has no edges.

STAGE 7: Practice Questions

1. Name any two 3D shapes.
2. How many edges does a cube have?
3. What is a net?
4. Which solid shape has only one curved surface?
5. Draw the net of a cube.
