Class 7 Mathematics

Chapter 14: Symmetry

STAGE 0: Foundation

Symmetry means same on both sides. If we fold a figure into two equal halves, it shows symmetry.

Examples of symmetry in daily life:

  • Butterfly
  • Human face
  • Leaf
  • Alphabet A

STAGE 1: Line of Symmetry

A line of symmetry divides a figure into two equal mirror-image parts.

Example:

  • Square → 4 lines of symmetry
  • Rectangle → 2 lines of symmetry
  • Circle → Infinite lines of symmetry

STAGE 2: Symmetry in Letters

Some English letters have lines of symmetry.

Vertical line of symmetry:

A, M, T, U, V, W, Y

Horizontal line of symmetry:

B, C, D, E

STAGE 3: Rotational Symmetry

A figure has rotational symmetry if it looks the same after rotation.

Order of rotational symmetry:

  • Square → Order 4
  • Rectangle → Order 2
  • Circle → Infinite

STAGE 4: Examples of Symmetry

  • Door → Line symmetry
  • Wheel → Rotational symmetry
  • Star → Line + rotational symmetry

STAGE 5: Important Points

  • Not all shapes have symmetry
  • Line of symmetry is imaginary
  • More lines → more balance

STAGE 6: Solved Examples

Example 1:
How many lines of symmetry does a square have?

A square has 4 equal sides and 4 equal angles. So, it has 4 lines of symmetry.

Example 2:
Does a scalene triangle have symmetry?

No. A scalene triangle has no equal sides. So, it has no line of symmetry.

STAGE 7: Practice Questions

1. How many lines of symmetry does a rectangle have?
2. Name any three letters with vertical symmetry.
3. What is rotational symmetry?
4. What is the order of rotational symmetry of a square?
5. Does a circle have line symmetry?
